Tequila and mezcal have gained significant popularity in recent years, with sales driven by high-profile celebrities appealing to U.S. consumers. From George Clooney to Kendall Jenner, many are eager to capitalize on this type of liquor

As mentioned in the title, some of these spirits are made using bat blood. Yes, bats. After hearing a news article from the BBC Network, where they interviewed a person by the name of Rodrigo Medellin who crafts some of the finest tequila using bat blood and saliva, I felt compelled to create this blog. The aim is to inform people about its origins, not to frighten or discourage anyone from consuming or buying it, but to raise awareness.

Rodrigo has a deep passion for bats. As a Mexican conservationist, he has been fascinated by bats for sixty years. During his childhood, he stored blood in ice cube trays in his parents' freezer to feed his pet vampire bats. Later, he founded Mexico City's inaugural Bat Festival and collaborated with governments, universities, NGOs, and researchers globally. As a result, some refer to Rodrigo as the "Bat Man."

Like most Mexicans, Rodrigo takes pride in his country's native spirits: Tequila and Mezcal. These agave spirits play a significant role in Mexico's economy, particularly in the states of Jalisco and Oaxaca. The exports of these beverages are valued at billions of dollars.

However, the surge in these industries has led to unintended consequences for Rodrigo's cherished bats. Frequently, the agave used to produce these spirits is harvested prematurely, before the slow-growing plant can bloom. As a result, bats are deprived of nectar, preventing them from fulfilling their crucial role as pollinators. This situation contributes to agave monocultures, which are susceptible to disease and blight.

Rodrigo continued by explaining his ambitious desire to revolutionize the tequila and mezcal industry through the introduction of a groundbreaking initiative: a "Bat-Friendly" certification. This certification aims to recognize and promote producers who commit to leaving at least 5% of their agave plants untouched, allowing these vital plants to bloom and flower naturally. The significance of this initiative lies in the crucial role that bats play in the ecosystem, particularly in pollinating agave plants. By fostering a habitat where these creatures can thrive, producers not only contribute to the sustainability of the agave population but also enhance the biodiversity of the region.


However, Rodrigo's vision faces considerable challenges, particularly from larger corporations within the industry. These corporations, driven by a relentless pursuit of profit and market dominance, often prioritize efficiency and mass production over traditional methods and ecological considerations. Their eagerness to capitalize on the growing popularity of tequila and mezcal has led to practices that frequently overlook the importance of maintaining a balanced ecosystem. As a result, much of the tequila produced today does not incorporate the natural assistance of bats in the pollination process, which can ultimately compromise the quality and flavor profiles of the spirits.


In contrast, Rodrigo advocates for a return to more sustainable practices that honor the traditional methods of production. He believes that by implementing the "Bat-Friendly" certification, consumers will be empowered to make informed choices that support environmentally responsible producers.
